checkmate: pawn breaks
This here is something which i did not really ever expect from DC,
Published back in 2007, so a few years old now, I read this about a year or two ago and found it again and figured that it was still interesting.
Whats cool?
This is like a spy, undercover, agency type of thing. Alot more our world than DC universe save the fact that Bane shows up and one of the bishops can turn into a green flaming and flying meta. And one guy can go invisable...anyway...
The chick on the cover page is named Sasha Bordeaux. She is the black queen of an operation called checkmate, which has a king and queen for opps (black) and intel (white), as well as all the usual peices in a regular chess game. From what I have skim read in online reveiws this was weaker the the previous checkmate volume, so the series could be worthwhile checking out.
If you ever see the movie, rescent movie actually, "Tinker tailor soldier spy", slow and stero typically i would say for old people because i was bord, it is almost a bit of a spy thriller like that. Only a bit more exiting. And more violence. Nice.
What is there to say?
Created this, and no, it is not in the New52.
This is not one of the best comics, if anything it gets a bit hard to read at some points, like most spie sorts of things it is rather slow. Also Sasha reminds me of Marvels Domino (Neena Thurman) only not as awesome.
Theres a bit of occult in there
The snake on this chapter page represents the kobra cult, which has murdered a series of people in tha same fasion, leaving rattle snakes to bite them and so on, so "pawn 502" is sent to infiltrate them.
I must admit, to describe this in one go I would call it clever. A read for more intellegent people, because this is a bit slow, complicated and not for the kids.
Sooo...
Check and Mate... I would only recomend this to anyone who likes spie movies and comics.
Then again, how could you not love comics...the good ones at least.

a kiwigirl, are you there? i have issues 1 - 7 and all three issue from the Fall of the Wall series when it comes to this Checkmate run.
ReplyDeleteby the way the guy who does the Bronze Tiger blog also talks about Checkmate in his latest posting.
Yes, Im a kiwi. How are the other Checkmate volumes? I found them pretty interesting, with the whole style and spy/agency theme to it rather than the superhero squads that were around and not as good as the more recent ones back then.
Deletethis posting from my SS blog will tell you everything you need to know about why several issues from the Checkmate series are essential to SS fans: http://suicidesquadtaskforcex.blogspot.com/2011/08/25-year-suicide-squad-anniversary-get.html
Deletei changed my screen name recently in case you were wondering.

DeleteAlso: Suicide squad timeline...NICE!
DeleteComicgirlX, I just did a post on TaskforceX and checkmate is connected. And I agree with you checkmate is more talk less action but Sasha is a tough customer in a complex dangerous world. find out the connection http://thebronzetiger.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteIf you look below you will see that although I do not own any, I LOVE suicide squad. I must get my hands on "kick in the teeth", which i beleive is the first volume of the New52 release coming out...June/July/August? I cannot remember, but i must order in one when I can afford it. I have followed your blog, thank you for the link. Nice to see so many comic lovers!
Deletethankx for joining up. Your spot has a good feel to it, I'm now on deck. I see the X-Men is your team, I like em too. The inclusion of the Submariner was genius and if they had of kept Blade around (with a better look) uncanny would have re-emerged as my favorite title.
DeleteI moved away from marvel as my premier universe because I didn't like the direction they went in with the Black Panther, his title him not being included in secret avengers, avengers, X-Men or AVX. Now I live inbetween the Hall of Justice and Belle Reve. But I will be looking to you for any info that I miss on T'Challa, Namor and Blade. Until my next venting....long live the Squad.
Haha, I can already tell I like your style!
